I am constantly fantasizing about ways to play with aspects of “truth” and questioning and drafting ideas of how to intervene in our complex history in order to shape and map it.

This new body of work investigates the playful and painful exchange between the history of culturally-developed stereotypes and representations of the black image in popular culture. I attempt to identify how our present and future are shaped by the opposition of the events and stories we choose to accept and those we choose to deny. To do this, I blend surface with depth, past with present and real with the imaginary.

I use the techniques of doll making, quilt making, collaging, crocheting and printmaking, which were all influenced by my ancestors. This is my way of forming a connection, continuing a tradition, preserving the memories and inserting myself into history from a site of resistance.
