Historical reference: The print draws from the historical photo collection of the Missouri History Museum, St. Louis. The collection holds the original photo of an enslaved woman by the name of Louisa holding Harry E. Hayward (ca. 1853-63). George A. Hayward purchased Louisa in 1858 for the purpose of assisting his wife, Ellen, in caring for their young son, Harry.
