BEACON is a 12-foot-tall steel, LED interactive sculpture inspired by African American inventor Lewis H. Latimer's 1880s patent drawings for the electric lamp and manufacturing of the carbon filament.

In 1842 Lewis Latimer’s parents George and Rebecca Latimer emancipated themselves from a Norfolk, Virginia plantation to settle in Boston, MA. As result of their bravery Lewis Latimer and his siblings were born free in the state of Massachusetts.
